ISBReMIT -Institute for Stem-cell Biology, Regenerative Medicine and Innovative Therapies

The Institute for Stem-Cell Biology, Regenerative Medicine and Innovative Therapies (ISBREMIT) was made possible due to European Structural and Investment Funds (ERDF), through which our Institute benefited of a funding amount of €14.400.000 allocated by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR), Managing Authority.

Built between the health facility "John Paul II" and the hospital, ISBREMIT is an Institute for scientific and health research with special functions and aims.

ISBReMIT will be the first factory of GMP neural stem cells in Europe to produce bio-drugs and cell-drugs, respecting the environmental and structural rules of reproducibility and traceability.

ISBReMIT laboratories and facilities will focus on pathophysiology, genetic and epigenetic control, proteomic studies on somatic stem cells, fostering advanced studies on the role of somatic stem cells in the impairment of tissue integrity, cellular ageing and in the pathogenesis of degenerative diseases; the genomics and molecular mechanisms of which will be further studied through experimental models of iPS, autologous induced pluripotent stem cells. With an animal facility implementing translational protocols in regenerative medicine, a GMP cell factory will produce pharmaceutical grade cells to be used in clinical trials approved by the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA).
ISBReMIT was designed to produce cell therapies, gene therapies and prostheses made of biomaterials, three very innovative branches in the research field that make it quite unique. There are not other institutions that can do the same thing in only one place, both in terms of structure and competences. They’re doing research respecting fully and totally the most tightening rules of ethics and morals, to serve and protect human life.
It also houses an area dedicated to the establishment of start-ups and spin-offs in biotechnology.

The Research Center in perfectly in line with the idea of the relief of the suffering St. Pio from Pietrelcina had in mind, when the 5th of May 1957, on the first anniversary of the Hospital, he hoped for the creation of "a center of intercontinental studies" to assist health professionals to improve their professional culture and Christian formation.
