Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit 1

The Intensive Care Unit 1 specializes in the management and treatment of critically ill patients, including those with severe impairments of vital functions, multi-organ failure, and polytrauma cases. Particular attention is given to patients with respiratory, cardiac, septic, and metabolic disorders.

Pain management is a key area of focus.

The unit is in the process of implementing a state-of-the-art digital medical records system.

Additionally, the department plays a critical role in organ and tissue procurement activities, coordinated by the Puglia Regional Organ Transplant Reference Center (CRPRTO) at the Policlinico of Bari.

Postoperative Intensive Care

The Postoperative Intensive Care Unit manages and treats patients undergoing major surgical procedures, whether emergency or elective, who are identified during preoperative assessments as having organ dysfunctions. These patients require close "surveillance" and enhanced monitoring of vital parameters during the immediate postoperative period.

Anesthesia for Abdominal Surgery

Anesthesia for Abdominal Surgery is applied to surgical procedures of varying risk levels, including operations on the liver, biliary tract, and pancreas, performed under general or regional anesthesia. The use of ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block techniques (e.g., fascial plane blocks) facilitates opioid-free postoperative analgesia. This approach offers significant advantages, particularly for frail patients, improving both comfort and satisfaction while reducing the length of postoperative hospital stays.

Anesthesia for Thoracic Surgery

Anesthesia for Thoracic Surgery is utilized in highly complex surgical procedures on high-risk patients. This approach employs "blended" techniques and ultrasound-guided nerve blocks (e.g., serratus plane block and erector spinae block) to deliver opioid-free postoperative analgesia. These techniques provide substantial benefits, particularly for frail patients, enhancing comfort and satisfaction and shortening postoperative hospital stays.

Anesthesia for Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery

Anesthesia for Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery leverages advanced ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block techniques and continuous professional development. This approach enables safe surgical interventions, both emergency and elective, for frail patients and those with organ dysfunction or coagulation disorders. The result is improved postoperative outcomes, with notable increases in patient satisfaction and comfort.

Anesthesia for Breast Surgery

Anesthesia for Breast Surgery, supported by advanced ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block techniques and ongoing training, enables breast surgery procedures to be performed in a day surgery setting, even for frail patients with organ dysfunction. This approach ensures opioid-free postoperative analgesia, significantly enhancing patient comfort and satisfaction.

Anesthesia for Obstetrics and Gynecological Surgery

Anesthesia for Obstetrics and Gynecological Surgery leverages advanced peripheral nerve block techniques and continuous professional development to perform both emergency and elective surgical procedures. This approach is particularly effective for managing fragile patients and those with organ dysfunctions, including individuals with coagulation disorders. It ensures better postoperative outcomes, significant patient comfort and satisfaction, and enhanced safety during elective and emergency cesarean sections.

 Labor Analgesia Service

The Labor Analgesia Service is an integral part of the "Pain-Free Hospital" program, involving anesthesiologists, obstetricians, and midwives in offering pain relief to expectant mothers. Pain during labor can overshadow the ability to fully experience this joyous moment with calm and serenity. Today, this service is available 24/7, utilizing the Continuous Epidural Analgesia technique. This method effectively controls labor pain without interfering with the natural dynamics of childbirth, allowing both mother and newborn to experience this extraordinary event free of suffering.

Acupuncture Service

The Acupuncture Service, recently introduced, operates under the Anesthesia Department as part of its pain management program. Acupuncture is one of the most recognized alternative medicine practices, endorsed by the WHO. Each treatment begins with an initial consultation to assess the condition and develop a personalized therapeutic plan, which is carried out over several sessions.

Applications include pregnancy-related conditions (e.g., hyperemesis, breech presentation management, and pregnancy-related pain), premenstrual syndrome, menstrual cycle irregularities, neuralgias, musculoskeletal pain, and degenerative or autoimmune diseases.

Anesthesia for Day Surgery

Anesthesia for Day Surgery supports a clinical-organizational model that enables surgical procedures to be performed on a day-hospital basis. This approach uses general, regional, or local anesthesia techniques to facilitate an early return to the patient’s home environment, minimizing the discomfort associated with hospitalization. It is primarily targeted at less complex surgical procedures for patients in good overall health.

The selection of anesthesia techniques is a critical aspect, with particular emphasis on loco-regional anesthetic and analgesic nerve blocks to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Anesthesia for Digestive Endoscopy

Anesthesia for Digestive Endoscopy involves anesthesiology support ranging from sedation-analgesia to general anesthesia for invasive endoscopic and ultrasound-guided procedures targeting the gastrointestinal tract, liver, biliary ducts, and pancreas, applicable to both adult and pediatric patients.

NORA (Non Operating Room Anestesthesia)

NORA (Non-Operating Room Anesthesia) refers to a range of anesthesiology procedures that support invasive interventions performed outside the operating room, aimed at maximizing patient comfort and tolerance. These include procedures carried out in Hemodynamics and Electrophysiology units as well as in Interventional Radiology.

PICC team

The PICC team comprises nurses who have completed advanced professional certifications and undergone specific, validated training.
This team specializes in the placement of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) under ultrasound guidance, a technique that has become increasingly prevalent due to its safety and effectiveness. PICC placement is essential for administering short-, medium-, and long-term infusions, such as chemotherapy, pain management medications for oncology patients, parenteral nutrition, and prolonged antibiotic therapy.
